Raymond Hoser

Raymond Hoser can be compared to Captain James Cook, in that both are well known Englishmen who ended up in Australia.
Captain James Cook was a brutal British racist, who went to foreign lands and whose band of thieves raped and pillaged native peoples.
His legacy is an invasion of people in southern lands who killed native peoples and destroyed the native ecosystems.
Nearly two centuries later in a second wave, Raymond Hoser came to Australia at age 5, with his parents from the UK.
Unlike Captain James Cook, Raymond Hoser spent his lifetime repairing the damage of Captain Cook's legacy, by putting human rights and wildlife conservation at the forefront of Australia's political and economic agenda.
In 1989, his first major book, Australian Reptiles and Frogs, was immediately recognized as "The Bible" on all things reptile in Australia.
It was the first step worldwide in bringing reptiles into the mainstream of human lives.
This included as pets for people and in terms of the need to conserve these and other species.
Building on this solid foundation, Hoser's next book, Endangered Animals of Australia brought wildlife conservation into the centre of Australian political life.
The ramifications of this book were also global.
But none of this compared to the massive upheaval of wildlife conservation and wildlife conservation laws globally, when in 1993, Hoser's third major book, Smuggled: The Underground Trade in Australia's Wildlife was first published.
This book was first banned by the Australian government, who sent police into bookshops to seize and destroy books in a move reminiscent of Nazi Germany.
Through the corageous efforts of a news corporation journalist, Fia Cumming and the assistance of a network of others, the ban became a major news story globally.
The Australian government was not only forced to back down on the unprecedented ban on the book, but it was also forced to rewrite wildlife conservation laws.
The legacy of these sequences of events has been the preservation of dozens of species of animals that would otherwise have become extinct and a whole generation of Australians who have the concern for the environment at the centre of their political views.
Raymond Hoser's fourth book, The Hoser Files, the fight against Entenched Official Corruption, blew the lid on police, political and judicial corruption in Australia and forced Royal Commissions into police in several states.
Again laws were rewritten across Australia.
All of Raymond Hoser's nine major books have had a significant positive impact on political and social affairs in Australia.
In terms of contribution to wildlife conservation globally, no one has made as many sacrifices as Raymond Hoser or created such a positive lasting contribution and legacy.
At the hands on level, Raymond Hoser's record speaks for itself.
Hundreds of major scientific papers with more discoveries than one could possibly list in a short summary.
World first captive breedings of countless species, discoveries of hundreds of species, including over 400 reptiles, over 100 frogs as well as fish and mammals.
In fact Raymond Hoser is not only the best known snake handler in the world, but he has also discovered more species and genera of snakes than anyone else in history, with the possible exception of George Boulenger, Edgar Cope and John Edward Gray from the 1800's.
In terms of animal wefare, Raymond Hoser has done more for reptiles than anyone else in human history.
In an immense scientific breakthrough, Hoser was the first to successfully surgically devenomize venomous snakes, by way of internal excision and removal of the venom glands (through the roof of the mouth), in a surgical procedure now repeated worldwide.
Snakes previously tormented with sticks and tongs (for the safety of the handler), no longer need to be mistreated this way by human handlers as the risk of fatal bite is removed.
The benefits to the snakes are obvious and easily quantifiable.
The captives are happy and well adjusted and suffer zero handling stress.
Quality of life of the snakes is improved and life expectancy extended beyond all expectations. To learn more about the work of the Snakeman Raymond Hoser and his businesses, Reptile Parties, Snake Removal, Snakebusters, Snake Avoidance and his work as the Melbourne Snake Catcher see the link below.
